Soup was the first course and it acme immediately. It was my first time having a Vichyssoise, it is a cold potato and leek soup. At first i thought, why are they serving me a bowl of cream, but that stupid thought quickly went away. I haven’t had a cold soup for so long, and it was great for a hot summer day. The soup was creamy yet not being too thick. The salad was fresh, however it was only average in terms of creativity to the salad, but it was surprising to see raw mushroom in it.
Kobe Beef Steak
We couldn’t believe our eyes when our chef came back with a huge piece of steak, the marbling on the piece of steak was premium. Our chef started to cut out pieces of fat from the steak and start searing it on the metal grilling plate right in front of us. He used the fat as the oil for our steak and vegetables. He first started searing only three pieces each of the Kobe beef to medium cooked as we insisted. When the meat was ready, he kindly recommended us to first eat it with a piece of fried garlic. It was the best condiment with Kobe beef, although the garlic wasn’t warmed up or fried in front of us, you can still taste the freshness and flavour. Most importantly the garlic isn’t oily and too overwhelming, just about right in bringing out the creaminess of Kobe beef. The meat was so delicious and tender, it melted in my mouth!
The chef then recommended me to have it with the mustard which i thought it was too strong for the Kobe beef. Another good pairing is a little sea salt with the Kobe beef just to bring out the flavours. However the ultimate best pairing is the warm bowl of rice, one bite of the beef and then a mouthful of rice, so comforting.
The vegetables were correctly cooked with right amount of seasoning. There were two pieces each of the vegetables, and they even served us two pieces of tofu which I have not had in any other restaurants in Kobe. I particularly liked the grilled beansprouts as they were crunchy and fresh!
Dessert was ice cream and coffee or tea.

Kobe beef lunch set – 9/10
My experience at Wakkoqu was more than just satisfying. The Kobe beef served was premium quality with great marbling. Although it is on the pricier side, however all the ingredients are served fresh, it was definitely worth every penny. The lunch set includes soup, salad, steak, vegetables and dessert and it will fill up a hungry adult man. The service was unstable, the reception lady was pushy and impatient especially when we were ordering. The chef was genuinely helpful but lacked friendliness and smiles. For Japanese standard, the service was average, they weren’t friendly or welcoming at all.
I would still come back to Wakkoqu despite it’s price, however i think it is still cheaper than Steak House Medium Rare at Oriental Hotel which was double the price, however the service and food at Steak House Medium Rare was also double the quality. You can’t even compare the two, one was top notch and one is high end. I would prefer Steak House Medium Rare, however for that price I can have two meals here at Wakkoqu
Would I go back again? Yes
