Following Djapa, Uma Nota is new to the Brazilian-Japanese food scene in Hong Kong.  Located on Peel street, Soho, Uma Nota has the no reservation policy so I was prepared to queue for atleast an hour.  i know it will be worth it since I am a fan of Peruvian and Nikkei cuisine and was anticipated to see what is the difference.

From the Raw section my favourite has to be the Scallop Tiradito because  the raw scallops were so fresh and sweet with just the right amount of red onion and mint.  I would order this again and again. The Ceviche Goa was slightly disappointing, there was not enough citrus juices, all I could taste was the coconut milk due  to the curry in it, despite that, the seafood were very fresh.  The Tuna Picadito were served on fried tortillas making it super addictive.  However it was not as spicy as I expected, would be better if I could taste the spiciness.

PORCO CROCANTE

As there were mishaps with our table, we had to wait over by the bar for over 30 minutes.  The lady was extremely polite and friendly, she apologized several times for the delay then offered us a free appetizer.  As our friend is a Vegan, she even offered a vegetarian dish.  Free food always taste better especially when they tasted real good in the first place.  The Dadinhos De Tapiocaare simply square pieces of fried tapioca and cheese.  The Coxinhas De Frango was my favourite though, it is fry chicken and okradumpling.  It was amazing with their homemade chilli saucem we dipped everything possible in the homemade chilli sauce. The Porco Crocante was a let down compared to the other starters.  The pork belly was dry and tough, was not crispy at all , it also did not go well with the tonkatsu sauce which tasted very much like hoisin sauce.

The beef skewers were one of my favourite, the meat was perfect! The beef was tender and super juicy and went so well with the ‘salsa’ type sauce.

MOQUECA – 6/10
Seabass stewed with tomatoes, garlic, urucum and Brazilian cumari chilies

Being very selfish about food, I actually thought it wouldn’t be enough for all three of us so we ordered another dish, but it is a bigger main.  They did not have seabass unfortunately that night so they said the alternative is Grouper so we all agreed.  The fish was tender and soft, however the dish itself wasn’t particularly flavourful.  It came in a hot clay pot and rice was served with it.

CAÏPIRINHAS

A FRESCA – 7/10
Cachaça, lime, sugar, fresh fruit of the day

A FRESCA

A FRESCA

I opted for the A Fresca which is their type of Caipirinhas.  It is made with the fruit of the day, that day it was passionfruit or grapefruit.  I obviously choose passionfruit and it was the best choice.  The drink was refreshing yet quite strong.

I wasn’t too sure what I was expecting from Uma Nota since I was confused with the Brazilian- Japanese cuisine, isn’t that just Nikkei cuisine? Nikkei cuisine is Peruvian and Japanese crossover which i absolutely love, so expected the Brazilian and Japanese cuisine to be quite similar since they are both in Latin America. Both serving ceviche and tiradito, using tigers milk with sashimi.
I absolutely loved my meal at Uma Nota, staffs were super friendly and welcoming, and I watch their interactions between them, they were like one big family just like the Latins americans do.  Really gave out that tropical vibe in this colouful and chilled restaurant.  Thank you to the lady who treated us like VIPs (even though we are not) and gave us some freebies while waiting.  I will definitely be coming back for some great food at a reasonable price in Soho.

Would I go back again? Yes
