Tokyolima has been on top of my list ever since it opened in 2016, serving Japanese – Peruvian known as Nikkei cuisine.  Opened by Pirata Group who also runs Pirata and The Optimist,  Tokyolima is located in Central.  Early this year they started serving a brunch menu on the weekends, serving between 12pm to 2:30pm every Sat & Sun.

Food

There are four categories on the brunch menu

  • Small Plates
  • NIKKEI Raw Bar
  • Hot
  • Sweet Treats

All dishes are to share so the size of the dishes depends of the number of diners.  We had two plates of every dishes between 6 of us.  With the ‘hot’ dish, everyone were allowed to choose only one dish for their main course.

Small Plates

Nikkei-style soba salad

There are two salads on the menu, this was the soba salad with seaweed, avocado and tomatoes.  The salad was slightly spicy yet creamy from the Japanese sesame dressing, however the salad did not surprise me.

“Ki-mo-chi” Fried Chicken – 9/10

These were delicious and really stood out from the salads that came in the first round of food.   The chicken thighs were covered in batter and fried until golden brown.  The meat was well marinaded and juicy, I also loved having some lime juice all over the meat.

The salad consist of pumpkin, mix leaf, poached quail egg, herloom confit tomato, grilled fennel. crispy glass noodles, almonds with a nikkei dressing.  This was a great salad with lots of different texture and having quail eggs as one of the ingredients definitely made a huge difference.  The nikkei dressing was also outstanding which makes me want to find out the recipe.

Lomo Saltado ‘El Taco’ – 7/10

We each had a taco to ourselves, however this was my least favourite dish.  The chilli chimichurri wasn’t spicy at all and the beef wasn’t very well seasoned.

Nikkei Raw Bar

Ceviche Clasico – 9/10

Ceviche Clasico

The Ceviche Clasico’s main ingredients are the seabass and tiger’s milk, it also contains sweet potato, onion, coriander and choclo which is a Peruvian corn.  The tiger’s milk was not as sour as I expected however I loved all the different textures from the potatoes and corn.  I loved the choclo, the texture reminds me of the Chinese gingko nuts.

H & M – 9/10

This was definitely my favourite dish of the meal.  Slices of the hamachi and maguro sashimi with shoyu citrus dressing.  The dressing made the dishes even more refreshing.

Picanha  (plus 28hkd) – 9/10

I chose the Picanha as my main dish, and so did the other 3 diners as it sounded more of a good deal.  For 28 hkd more each we were served a grilled rump steak with edamame puree, pickled cucumber.  I wanted my steak medium and it came slightly cooked, however the steak was still succulent and juicy.  The other people ordered their steak to be medium rare and it came exactly medium rare.

Lobster Acevichada (For two) (plus 128hkd) -N/A

My two other friends ordered the Lobster Acevichada which was for two people, 128 hkd extra between two people was also a very good deal.  The fresh lobster was cooked in chilli butter, from what I saw, there was more than enough for two people.

Sweet Treats

Dessert Platter – 7/10

Banana Boat

Ice Cream Trio

Ice Cream Trio

No choices were given for dessert, there was a plate of ice cream with three flavours, then the next plate was banana split.  As it was very hard to share the desserts between 6 people on a long table, we spoke to the staff and they kindly gave us another plate of the dessert platter.  The dessert was a let down, cannot see any creativity in it or see any nikkei style in the dessert either.

Brunch Free Flow

We all opted for the free flow and we were given the choices of

  • Sake
  • White wine
  • Red wine
  • Prosecco
  • Beer
  • Cocktail

Sake – Takizawa Tokuju Honjozo

Prosecco – Carpene Malvolti

Cocktail – Flower In The Rain

We all started off with the designated cocktail, Flower In The Rain.  The cocktail was very captivating and refreshing, after one glass I was hooked.  Although I dislike Vodka, however this cocktail I could hardly taste the vodka.  I loved the rose lemonade and lime juice which neutralized out the vodka.  This drink was very lethal though, after having 4 glasses of this and few rounds of sake, I was pretty merry.  I was glad I walked out fine.

I had a great Sunday in Tokyolima, we spent over 5 hours in there, drinking and chatting away.  The food was tasty and different from the usual boring brunch.  With only 180 hkd extra we had free flows of alcohol, there were many great choices for the drinks too, I would highly recommend the cocktail.  The staffs were super friendly and helpful, and even rushesd us to drink up, how cute! We sat there after they have closed for the afternoon and they did not even kick us out, I have fallen in love with Tokyolima and will sure to be back!

Would I go back again? Yes
