RŌNIN is the sister restaurant of a very successful restaurant, Yardbird, serving mainly seafood whereas Yardbird serves only chicken.  Opened back in 2013, and I have only decided to pay a visit in 2017, I am so ashamed!  It has been one of the best restaurant voted by many Hong Kong bloggers and it certainly doesn’t disappoint.

We were started off with the Pumpkin Ball with Sweet Miso as a complimentary amuse bouche. This was a great taster to the great dishes ahead as it was not too rich and doesn’t leave any other taste on your tongue.

We did not order too much sashimi as I am not a huge fish fan, however I know you cannot go wrong with sea bream.  The Sea Bream sashimi was extremely fresh coated evenly with the Karasumi and yuzu, it was extremely refreshing.

This was one of our favourite dish of the night, I don’t thnk I have ever had such a great seafood dish.  The crunchiness of the Mizuna and negi (spring onion) balanced out the firmness of the Yellowtail Sashimi.  I have no idea what dressing they used but this dish was so addictive, we finished it within  two minutes.  Absolutely divine!

The Market Chips were good but not great. There were not much surprise from it.  The chips consisted of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and lotus root with black sugar is drizzled on top.  I am not a big fan of sweet chips, but these were crispy and not oily at all.

The portion on each skewer was bigger than I expected.  The fish was crispy on the outside and extremely juicy on the inside, grilled to perfection.  The miso paste was slightly salty but went very well with the fish meat.

The Kagoshima beef is the only dish that is non seafood on the menu and it is highly recommended by other bloggers.  I had high expectations and I can assure you it exceeds all expectations.  The Kagoshima beef is half raw which makes it super tender and juicy.  The dish came with a raw egg yolk in the centre which we poked straight away which made the dressing extra creamy.  Loved the Maitake mushrooms and the fried garlic which was extremely crunchy.

I am a huge fan of Unagi rice so when I saw it on the menu, i decided it was a must for the night.   The rice was served in a big bowl and came with a wooden spoon.  The unagi was perfectly grilled with lots of sauces, however there were lots of bones in the fish.  Despite that, the rice was extremely delicious absorbing the sauces from the fish.

RŌNIN is hidden on On Wo Lane with no signage and no windows, so look out for dark grey restaurant front with a wooden handle door.  Do not arrive too early than your booking as they are no reception for you to wait at, they will only send you away.  The restaurant is fairly tiny, with only twenty bar seats.  Make sure you make a booking early.

Verdict

RŌNIN was mindblowing for a non seafood foodie like me!  I resist going to a seafood base restaurant as I always leave feeling hungry.  However I left RŌNIN feeling ridiculously full and satisfied.  I regret not coming earlier, every dish was made to perfection and really expanded my food palette.  I am still reminisicing on Yellowtail sashimi dish which was totally addictive.  It was a little disappointing being told no dessert available, however the cocktails was just as good.  I would love to come back, it is one of the most memorable dinner I have had in Hong Kong and I have nbeen raving on to lots of friends and family.
