Taiwan is known for their nightmarket snacks and cheap yet tasty local food, but lacked in casual fine dining restaurants.  So when two contemporary restaurants opened in the same year, MUME and RAW took Taipei by storm.  Both opened in 2014 and changed Taipei’s dining scene ever since.  Foodies has flogged to Taipei ever since these two restaurants have made it on the Asia 50 Best Restaurant List for two years.
MUME is opened by three chefs – Ritchie Lin who is the head chef and co-founder who has worked at the four-time ‘World’s Best Restaurant’, Noma.  He later on went to work at Sydney’s top restaurant, Quay where he met Australian chef, Kai Ward who became a partner at Mume.  Last and not least, Long Xiongwho worked at t three Michelin-starred restaurant Per Se in New York.  The trio had a concept to open up a crossover modern European cuisine and casual fine dining restaurant in Taipei.

SNACKS

Country sourdough – 8/10

Unfortunately the sourdough was not warm when I dug in, however the crust is very crispy and soft on the inside.  On the side was beer butter, smoked beef fat butter and sea salt.  My favourite was the smoked beef butter, the taste is very unique, tasted like caramel!

SMALLER

Wagyu Tartare – 10/10

I have heard so much about this dish here at MUME, it was so exciting to see this dish in front of me. It was love at first sight, I have never seen a beef tartare so colourful and vibrant! Wagyu beef is finely diced with ckam mayo and confit egg yolk on top.  What made this beef tartare so interesting was the crunchy lotus root and preserved daikon mixed into the beef,  so much textures and flavours. Wonderful dish and I highly recommend this.

Summer Salad – 7/10

The Summer Salad was recommended by the staff and I knew I had to order it since MUME is inspired by NOMA who focus on farm-to-table dishes.  There are 20 plus seasonal ingredients in this salad and the staff who recommended says they use no dressing or sauce with the salad.  The salad was fresh and looked very beautiful however it was not my favourite.  There are so much different texture and flavours going on but it lacked unity.  I was expecting much more from this dish since Noma is famous for their seasonal ingredients and farm to table dishes.

Scallop Ceviche – 10/10

Another of my favourite that night. Their adaptation of the Peruvian dish was amazing. Presented on a crispy grain tostada, with diced scallops, cucumber, salmon row and cheese.  I love the crispiness of the toscada and the crunchiness of the cucumber!

BIGGER

I ordered two dishes from the BIGGER category, at first I only ordered the Wagyu Beef Cheek which was a huge disappointment.  The smoked yogurt sauce was extremely tasty however the beef cheek was rather tough and bland.  We then decided to give the BIGGER dishes another try and ordered the Pork Neck which we were told it is one of their popular dish.  The presentation of the Pork Neck dish was unfussy, with pieces of baby lettuce hiding the cubes of pork neck.  The pork neck was tender and very well executed. The Pork Neck was far tastier than the Wagyu Beef Cheek.

Complimentary Sweets

I was too full to order a dessert from the SWEETER category, as it was my birthday MUME served me a plate of two chocolate balls.  It was very sweet and attentive of them.

Ambience & Interior

The restaurant from the outside looks very minimalistic and intimidating, the intimidation continues as I walk through the door to the bar area at the front.  I was led to my table in the dining area which was more cozier  The restaurant was relatively small with an open kitchen at the back.  The lights were kept dimmed it very romantic however I noticed no diners dressed up for this occasion.  If this restaurant was in Hong Kong or London, everyone would be all dressed up!

Mume has been on my ‘to go’ list for two years and I was over the moon to finally get a reservation on my birthday. Overall it was a splendid meal here at MUME however it was not mindblowing.  Several dishes were winners while some were definitely a miss.  The Wagyu Tartare and Scallop Ceviche were absolutely addictive and the highlights of the meal.  A meal at Mume costed approximately 2700 NTD (700hkd) and it was worth every penny spent. In having said that, they need to improve on their cocktails, there wasn’t much innovation going on with the cocktails and some were really disappointing

Would I go back again? Yes
