Not many people know off Monocle magazine. However after working for amagzine I know exactly what Monocle magazine is. When I found out there is a Monocle Café in London, i couldn’t wait to pay my visit.  I was wondering if it has anything to do with the magazine itself. Without doubt this is Monocle magazine’s first concept store in Europe (there is one in Japan), opened by the publisher and entrepreneur, Tyler Brûlé.

The matcha hot chocolate with the macarons behind

I came especially for this hot chocolate (superficial of me I know!), but isn’t it adorable? However, the matcha cream on top does look like.. I won’t say, I will leave that to your imagination.  After giving it a good stir I mixed together the matcha and hot chocolate, and to my dismay, it was no longer matcha. the chocolate was too strong and very rich, not that I am complaining, but if only the matcha was stronger it would have been perfect.  Mind you, I would prefer drinking this on a cold winter day.

Matcha Tart with white chocolate

Matcha tart with white chocolate

I couldn’t resist ordering this tart, look at that matcha! The tart itself was buttery and crispy.  The matcha was strong n dense, i love it. However the white chocolate on top was too sweet for me, so i had to leave the chocolate out!

I bought two macarons, one for my friend and one for myself of course. I don’t think any girls can resist macarons right? I am still surprised the pink/coral macaron (right) is black sesame flavour, however my friend did confirm it tasted like black sesame.  My macaron was chewy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I love it, perfectly made, only if it was slightly bigger.

Group photo time!

The little room on the ground floor

There is a lounge room on the ground floor, just behind the counter. There is also a room down at the basement.  Plenty of comfortable seatings with natural sunlight shining in on the ground floor and even a TV. There are Monocle magazine scattered around the room to read if you are bored.

The design is kept simple, white as the main colour theme, with light wooden counter and tables. Simple and plain cups and plates, making it extra cosy and comfortable.  I love this Japanese Swedish hybrid cafe!
