Khao Soi Khun Yai is famous for their Khao Soi.  Khao Soi is their Thai Curry Noodles and Khao Soi Khun Yai is supposed to serve the best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai.  The small simple restaurant is located in between two temples, really easy to miss this restaurant.

Vermicelli

I was surprised to see a Tom Yum Soup base noodles as I expected them to only serve Khao Soi.  I love Chiang Mai’s boat noodles with Tom Yum soup so I couldn’t resist to order this noodle.
The soup looked extremely spicy and it was.  You have a choice of chicken or pork, we ordered the pork.  The pork was nicely marinaded and the noodles came fishballs which was smaller than the ones we get in Hong Kong but the texture was much denser. I liked this dish as I am a fan of vermicelli.  Vermicelli absorbs the soup alot more so every mouthful I have the vermicelli, I get to taste lot of the soup too.

KHAO SOI (CHICKEN) – 8/10

We ordered a bowl of Khao Soi which is a must.  I noticed everyone had two or three bowls of Khao Soi noodles as the portion is quite small.  As a girl, I wanted to have a second bowl, I am sure one bowl is not enough for a man.
The Khao Soi’s soup was thick and creamy..  They used the thick yellow noodles instead of vermicelli, which was cooked perfectly, not too soft or hard.  Lots of crispy fritters on top which gave it some crispiness which was enjoyable.  I opted for chicken which I wasn’t disappointed as they were boneless tender chicken parts.  you can choose from pork or beef too.  The soup was slightly spicy, however not as spicy as the Tom Yum vermicelli.  If you need to top up the spiciness then there’s always the chilli flakes that wasprovided or the famous 4 sauces that is on each table.

It is very easy to miss Khao Soi Khun Yai as it is situated between two temples and there is no obvious sign.  Do not expect there to be a huge English sign too.  Look out for a rusty old gate, walk in and on your left you should see some shelter with tables underneath.  Find your own seats and she will come along to take orders! Goodluck!
