The first to arrive was the Shanghai steamed dumpling, ginger infused vinegar.  I ordered two pieces of these as I knew we cannot share this nor would I want to share this,  When we usually have Shanghai steamed dumpling, we will need to dip it into vinegar ourselves, however A.Wong has infused the ginger vinegar into the dumpling which means that this was super juicy and you will need to pop this into your mouth all in one go! Remember to pinch the top of the dumpling with your dumplings and not the middle part to ensure you won’t pop the dumpling and spill the juices!

Pork and prawn dumpling, pork crackling – 4/10

Pork and prawn dumpling, pork crackling

This was my least favourite. The meat was dry and tough, and tasted very much like normal pork dumpling (sui mai) and adding the crackling on top was tasty, however it didn’t make it the best pork dumpling.

Baked roasted pork bun with a sugared coating – 5/10

I had high hopes for the Baked roasted pork bun with a sugared coating as I have tasted many of these in Hong Kong, especially the ones from Tim Ho Wan (HK) who really did make this dish famous. The sugar coating here was too sweet and not crunchy enough, they need to bake it for longer till when the crust is golden brown.  The roast pork filling was over sweet.

This came as a surprise as I was sure I didn’t order this. I must have ordered it by accident, but that was a good surprise as the dumpling was perfectly made and marinaded. I loved the boldness of the Chinese chives, with the crispy batter on the bottom.

Please meet my new best friend, the Steamed duck yolk custard bun.  Isn’t she (I think it’s a she) pretty? In the shape of a fruit, even with these fake stem and leaves, makes you want to befriend her straight away right.  The bun was soft, fluffy and warm.  After biting into it, the duck egg yolk was flooding out. Every bite I made into it, the yolk was flooding out. It seriously was divine, I would if I could eat 10 of these! I want these everyday!

I ordered this for my mum who likes these sweet dumpling 煎堆.  The presentation was fancy, making a simple sweet dim sum so much more fancy.  It acme on a spoon which i kept thinking it will roll off.  The sweet dumpling was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.  It was nicely fried, however i don’t really like the sweet foie gras filling.

Wild mushroom and truffle steamed bun – 6/10

One of my favourite dim sum/bao. I first met this little gem in Hong Kong at Social place where they do a fantastic mushroom buns that looks so much like a mushroom, using cocoa powder to look like a Chinese mushroom.  The Wild mushroom and truffle steamed bun was delicious, however it was too watery and didn’t look as realistic as the ones I have had in Hong Kong.

Rabbit and carrot glutinous puff – 9/10

I have had this also in Social Place in Hong Kong, i also attended a one day lesson there learning how to make this.  The Rabbit and carrot glutinous puff was crunchy and soft inside. However there wasn’t much fillings inside.

I like a.Wong, although the dim sums were between a hit and a miss. However the Steamed duck yolk custard bun made everything so perfect.  The dim sums here are adventurous, ambitious and innovative.  Definitely a bit of a change to the normal dim sum you get in UK.  However it isn’t the best if compared to the ones in Hong Kong.  It is on the pricey side as price is per a piece and not for a plate.

Would I go back again? Yes
